HEFCE has been appointed to monitor the performance of higher education providers against the 'Prevent' duty, under section 26 of the Counter Terrorism and Security Act. The body will be able to request information to observe how providers discharge their duty in having 'due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.'
The statutory guidance for higher education institutions on meeting this duty was amended in July, and is currently being placed before both houses of Parliament for approval. It passed the Commons last week and is expected in the Lords on Thursday 17th September. Pending approval of the updated guidance, the government will set a commencement order for the duty.
