Higher education institutions are generally tolerant, inclusive and welcoming communities. However, tensions can arise between different groups for a variety of reasons. These include the use of university facilities, geo-political events or planned events. Institutions should have formal processes in place to mitigate the potential for tensions to arise and to address them in a transparent and consistent manner when they do.
Avoiding marginalisation or disputes between different faiths or societies is important and institutions should develop their own processes to deal with these issues. Several resources have been developed to assist institutions in doing this.
